Kehilat Middlesbrough Newsletter No 20
July 2004 page 5 (of 8)

Letters

I don't think anyone has yet mentioned the annual sports day of the cheder, when we all went to Lealholme.  One of the highlights was the handicap race for boys, meticulously organised by Sam Solomon.  I remember one in particular in the early 1960s, when I was leading until I lost a shoe and David Jaffa flashed past to win.  There was also a men's race which I think Harold Stock used to win regularly.  In those days there was no equivalent race for the women, but they did make lovely sandwiches.

My bar mitzvah was almost certainly the last that Sam Solomon taught (November 1968).  I remember clearly making a slight mistake and covering it up so no one would notice, only to hear Mr Solomon loudly chiding me.

I must say, my mother and I really appreciate the Kehilat Middlesbrough newsletter, which my cousin David Niman kindly forwards to me (I rarely use the internet at home get fed up of it at work!).

A big thank you to you and David Saville for your inspiration in setting up this virtual community and for your efforts on behalf of the far-flung ex-Middlesbroughians. One of these days I’ll get round to sending you a contribution!

Denis and Susan Broady moved to Cheadle (South Manchester), where my husband and I live, a few years ago. I don’t know whether you knew that Denis Broady had died on 15 December 2003. Susan (his widow) and Stella (his sister) would like only a straightforward announcement in the newsletter, but no obituary. I thought I’d let you know, just in case the grapevine hadn’t worked!

Just surfing the net and came across this Middlesbrough website. My grandfather and father were born in Middlesbrough.    Zeider was Isaac Solomon, a shoe repairer in Boundary Road, and my father was Morris Solomon, who left there when he was young and lived in London. My name is Raymond Solomon, was born and lived in London all my life until five years ago  when I moved here to Los Angeles.

My father had various brothers, Harry,Michael ( Mick), Dave, Sam and Phil twins and a sister  called Dinah. I know Mick had two daughters, Anne and Bernice. Dave also had two daughters Tanya and Lorraine. Harry had a daughter, I think called Leila.  Dinah moved to the States but returned after her divorce. I am the only Solomon boy !    I learnt in Gateshead Yeshivah, and have been in Office Admin. all my life, although I am now retired.

Zeider lived his later life in the Joel Intract Memorial Home in Sunderland, where he is buried. Over the years I have lost contact with all my family and would love to know if anyone of my cousins are alive still and where they are !

I remember Rev Kersh and when I was evacuated during the war went to Cheder in the shul.  I also think that Mick's wife's maiden name was Smollen. And Dave's wife Dinah was a Hershberg. My email is westken500@aol.com  and would love to hear from anyone out there who knew any of my family.

I have nine children, seven boys and two girls. Two boys live in New Jersey, the two girls in Canada, Toronto and Montreal, and have four sons living this side of the stated in and around Los Angeles, and one son left in London.
