Obituary

John Bloom

Born Hartlepool 22 March 1928; died Osmotherley 16 June 2002

The Teesside Jewish community mourns the loss of its most distinguished member. John Bloom was outstanding in his chosen sport and career. As a Rugby forward he played for his town, his county and the Army. Career-wise he became a distinguished solicitor, collecting a law degree on the way. He rose high in his profession, becoming senior partner in a large Teesside firm. He was President of the Durham and North Yorkshire Law Society and held the chair of both Rent and Industrial Tribunals from time to time

He was a generous benefactor and in addition gave much of his time by way of wise advice and counsel to many organisations, such as the Cleveland Alzheimer's Residential Centres, the Cleveland Community Foundation and Macmillan College. He was in practice for more than 50 years until stricken by his illness in September 2001. Nevertheless, he remained courageous and cheerful.

Born in 1928 in Hartlepool John was always active in the Jewish community, where he rendered valued service. After marriage he moved to Stockton on Tees. Later, that Congregation merged with Middlesbrough where John was eventually holding the offices of President, Trustee and Honorary Solicitor. He led that Congregation as long as possible but membership declined so much that the synagogue had to be disposed of. He organised the most impressive closing service, attended by dignitaries and people from many parts of the United Kingdom and indeed the world.

As a Rotarian he was President of Stockton Rotary Club and as a Freemason he attained senior rank.

John was kindly, tolerant, courteous and good-humoured. Being a hard worker in his profession and in so many other causes his leisure time was limited, but such time as he had to spare was devoted to his family, his garden and to helping others less fortunate than himself.

He is survived by Nan, his wife for 48 years, his son Robin, his daughter Tracey and two grandchildren.
