Letters
We recently received what can be
called the Nat Bharier Archive. Diaries from 1929, letters,
ephemera, paper cuttings and lots of photos. I'm sure there will be
much to interest you and all the other Boro people.
Meanwhile, here is the first extract:
From a letter dated 13th January 1942
to Nat Bharier from Issy Greenstein:
"Forgetting for a moment the
unfortunate establishment known to the uninitiated as Transporter
Hotel, I can safely say that never in my army career have I been
so satisfied with army life as I was at Middlesrough for which I
have to thank you and Sophie and all the people I met at Shool."
During the early years of World War
II, Nat Bharier taught groups of soldiers radio mechanics. The
"Middlesbrough Course" became well known for its excellent
tuition and there are many letters of thanks from soldiers to their
teacher.
Issy Greenstein was to come to Israel
very soon after the foundation of the State and became a leader in
setting up the financial substructure. He changed his name to Israel
Gal-Ed and was at one time the director general of a government
ministry. At the time of his death in 1977 he was managing director
of the Israel Corporation.

Having just looked through your
fascinating Website, I wondered if you could put me onto your
mailing list. I am the middle son of the late Shirley Rose (nee
Goldstein) and grandson of Louis Goldstein. I wondered if anyone
knew any details about my late Grandfather as I barely remember him
and am told he was an extremely colourful character

My great grandfather was Asher
Michaelson who lived in Middlesbrough at the beginning of the
1900's. I am trying to gather any information people may have on my
family from around this period or before.

I recently gave a talk on Jewish
Festivals to Witton Gilbert WI in Co Durham. The President of the WI
is Jane Beckwith, whose mother Mrs Nora Bradley (nee Mossom) was the
Kosher butcher at Newton Street Middlesbrough.
She is 90 this year and lives at
Holmeside, Bradbury Nr Sedgefield, Teesside.
Possibly her sisters Hilda Singer and
Evelyn Clinkard may also be known to the readers of your Newsletter.
Anybody want to drop Mrs Bradley a line?
Best wishes

PS. Off to celebrate 80th birthday of
David Josephs, now of Brighton but son of late Ferdie Josephs of
Middlesbrough/then Harrogate. Jane Klapper (nee Josephs) will be
visiting from Hod Hasharon, Israel. David is a cousin of my late
father-in-law Reuben Olsburgh, born in Middlesbrough
