Notes for JOSHUA (JOS) SMOLLAN:

Batchelor. Applied for naturalization in Cape of Good Hope in 1893. With his brother, Solomon Smollan, bought the Grand Hotel in Vryburg, South Africa in 1907, and did extensive alterations to the hotel in 1912. Solomon left in 1917, on the death of his wife Leah, to be replaced by Jos' nephew, David Smollan until 1927, when they sold the hotel to a family called Rolof. He died aged in his nineties and is buried at the Westpark Cemetery, Johannesburg, grave no. H 870. 

2. HARRIS (HIRSZ LEJB) (TZVI ARIYE)² SMOLLAN (AARON (AHARON)¹ SMOLAN) was born Abt. 1847 in Lozdzei, Poland, and died 15 August 1921 in Sydenham Nursing Home, Harrogate, Eng;and. He married RACHEL (ROCHA) KUZANSKI / DANIELS 1866 in Sejny, Suwalki, Poland.

Notes for HARRIS (HIRSZ LEJB) (TZVI ARIYE) SMOLLAN:

Hebrew name was Benyamin. In Poland the surname was spelt as Smolan. Came to England in 1869. In 1874 he was a jeweller and the family lived at 17 Prince Arthur St, Middlesbrough. By 1876, while still a jeweler, the family had moved to 49 Albert Street, Middlesbrough, England, where he was an honorary synagogue reader. Went to Australia, 1880 to August 1881, before arriving in the Cape of Good Hope in late 1881. Was a businessman in Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage. Returned to England in 1900 and came back to the Cape in 1905. Applied for South African citizenship, 2nd July 1906, when he was a general dealer residing at Uitenhage, Cape Province, South Africa. Also had business interests in Southport, England, where he was a shipping agent. His Southport address was 82 Forest Road. Died from leukemia. Of his children, 2 sons & 3 daughters were born in England, 3 daughters and one son born in the Cape of Good Hope, and one daughter born "abroad." In his will he stated that he was relying on his sons David & Joseph to find husbands of the Jewish faith for their unmarried sisters!

Emigrated to Middlesbrough, England. Present at the consecration for the foundation stone for the Middlesbrough Synagogue, 21 August 1873. (Middlesbrough Exchange, 22/8/1873). Naturalised 1902. General dealer residing in Port Elizabeth. Arrived in the Cape of Good Hope abt 1880. Some of his children had the surname Smollen on their bitrth certificates

Lived in Bristol, England, occupation Hawker. Arrived in the Cape of Good Hope in abt 1896. Shopkeeper in the Port Elizabeth district. Then owned and managed the Vryburg Hotel, with his brother, Jos Smollan as his partner, from 1907 until 1917. Towards the end of his life he lived in Johannesburg with his daughter Rose until his death. He is buried in the Brixton Cemetery, Johannesburg, grave no. 1396.
