Foundation
Stone Laid
The foundation stone of the
new synagogue in Park Road South, Middlesbrough, was laid
yesterday by Mr Maurice Marks, one of
the trustees and a leading figure in Teesside Jewish
circles.
Despite
heavy rain there was a good attendance.
Mr P Simon, chairman of the building fund, presided at the
ceremony, and also at a gathering in the Linthorpe Assembly Rooms.
Others present were Mr I Freeman, (vice chairman of the building
fund), Mr L B Baker (treasurer) and Messrs E Hush and B M Marks
(joint hon secretaries.)
The
service was conducted by Rabbi L Miller, assisted by the Rev G
Wulwik and the Rev S Turtledove.
At
the ceremony, Mr Marks referred to his 34 years active connection
with the Middlesbrough Jewish community. Mr. N. Thompson, builder,
presented him with a souvenir trowel.
Work
Done by Women of Community
At
the Linthorpe Assembly Rooms Mr Simon proposed the health of
Mr Marks. Reference was made to the good work done by
Messrs J Wilks, H Benjamin and I Hush in connection with the
present synagogue.
Mr
T Freeman proposed the health of the guests, and mentioned his
appreciation of the indefatigable work of the women of
the community, particularly Mrs Miller, wife of the Rabbi.
Dr E Goldsborough, of Rothwell, replied. Mr Baker expressed
appreciation of the way Rabbi Miller was cementing the friendship
of the Jewish and non-Jewish people of the district. Rabbi Miller
replied.
A
vote of thanks to Mr Simon was moved by Mr A Halson.
It
is expected that the new synagogue will be completed by the end of
March. The present scheme is for a synagogue only, but it is hoped
later that a schoolroom and lecture‑hall will be built
adjoining the synagogue.
